An Asia cruise lets you see several countries without repacking, from temples and gardens in Japan to street food and markets in Southeast Asia. It suits travelers who want variety and are comfortable with long flights. Timing matters more here than in many regions, because weather differs a lot from north to south.
When to go
Broadly, October through April is the best window, but the right month depends on where you sail.
| When | What to expect | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| March to May | Spring in Japan and Korea. Cherry blossoms typically peak in late March and early April. Southeast Asia is hot. | Japan, cherry blossom sailings |
| June to September | Hot and humid. Rainy season in much of the region and typhoon season in East Asia, which can change ports. | Flexible travelers, northern Japan |
| October to November | Cooler, clearer weather in Japan with autumn leaves. Rains ease in Southeast Asia. | Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan |
| December to February | Dry season and the most comfortable weather in Southeast Asia. Cold in northern Japan. | Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Bali |
Itinerary types compared
Japan
Japan cruises are often round trips from Tokyo (Yokohama) or Kobe and Osaka. Typical ports include Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Kagoshima and Hakodate, and many sailings add Busan in South Korea. Ports are clean, well organized and easy to explore on your own by train. From Kobe or Osaka, Kyoto is within reach on a day trip by train or organized tour.
Southeast Asia
These cruises usually start in Singapore, Hong Kong or Bangkok. Common stops include Laem Chabang (for Bangkok), Phuket, Penang, Port Klang (for Kuala Lumpur), and Vietnam ports such as Phu My (for Ho Chi Minh City), Da Nang and Ha Long Bay. Some ports are a long drive from the city they serve, so check transfer times. Some itineraries include an overnight stay in a major city, which gives you an evening ashore to explore night markets and dining.
Longer voyages and river cruises
Longer sailings link Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia, or continue to India, Australia or the Middle East. River cruises on the Mekong connect Cambodia and Vietnam on small ships, often paired with a land tour.
Where cruises leave from
The main hubs are Singapore and Tokyo, where ships use Yokohama or Tokyo’s own cruise terminal. Hong Kong and Bangkok (via Laem Chabang) are also common start and end points. All of them have good air links to the US, and Singapore and Tokyo are easy cities for a pre-cruise stay.
Which cruise line?
- Princess Cruises has a long-running Japan program, with many round trips from Tokyo and spring blossom sailings.
- Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises sail seasonally from Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo with large, activity-rich ships.
- Oceania Cruises and Viking Ocean Cruises offer longer, port-intensive voyages on mid-size ships with a focus on food and culture.
- Holland America Line, Silversea and Seabourn also sail Asia, often on longer itineraries and world cruise segments.
Packing and travel documents
Entry rules differ by country. Some countries in the region expect visas or electronic travel authorization arranged before you sail, and rules change. Many also expect your passport to have several months of validity left and blank pages. Check current entry requirements for every country on your itinerary with each country and with your advisor. Our US passport page covers applying and renewing.
- Light, breathable clothing, plus an outfit that covers shoulders and knees for temples and shrines.
- Slip-on shoes. You will often remove them at temples and some restaurants.
- A compact umbrella or rain jacket in any season.
- Plug adapters, as outlet types vary across the region.
- Some local cash. Card acceptance varies, especially at small shops and markets.
