The Caribbean and the Bahamas are the most popular cruise region for US travelers. Ships sail year-round from Florida, Texas, Louisiana and Puerto Rico, and short trips are easy to fit into a long weekend. It suits first-time cruisers, families, couples and anyone who wants warm water and beach time without a long flight.
When to go
There is no bad month to cruise the Caribbean, but the trade-offs change with the season. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and is most active from August to October. Cruise lines watch storms closely and will change ports or routes when needed, so flexibility matters more than safety.
| When | What to expect | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| December to April | Dry, sunny and less humid. Peak demand, especially around holidays and spring break. | Escaping winter, reliable weather |
| May and early June | Warm and mostly dry before hurricane season builds. Fewer crowds after spring break. | Couples, flexible travelers |
| June to August | Hot and humid with brief afternoon showers. School holidays bring more families. | Family trips, calm Bahamas sailings |
| September to November | Peak hurricane risk through October. Quieter ships and ports. | Travelers who can accept itinerary changes |
Eastern, Western, Southern or Bahamas?
Most Caribbean cruises fall into one of four patterns. Each has a different feel, so it helps to decide what you want from your days ashore.
- Eastern Caribbean: Typically 7 nights from Florida with more sea days. Common calls include St. Thomas, St. Maarten, San Juan and sometimes Antigua or Tortola. Good for beaches, duty-free shopping and snorkeling.
- Western Caribbean: Often 4 to 7 nights from Florida, Texas or New Orleans. Ports such as Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatán, Belize City and Grand Cayman offer Maya ruins, reefs, cave tubing and zip lines.
- Southern Caribbean: Usually 7 nights or longer, often from San Juan or on longer sailings from Florida. Islands like Aruba, Curaçao, Barbados, St. Lucia and Grenada are farther apart and feel more varied. Aruba and Curaçao sit south of the usual hurricane belt.
- Bahamas: Short 3- to 5-night trips from Florida, often with Nassau and a cruise-line private island. Good for a first cruise or a quick break.
Several lines operate private islands or beach destinations in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. These days are relaxed and easy, but they replace a visit to a real island town, so check how many are on your itinerary.
Where cruises leave from
Florida has the most choice. Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral serve every pattern, and Tampa works well for the Western Caribbean. Galveston and New Orleans are driving distance for much of the central US and mostly sail west. San Juan puts you closest to the Southern Caribbean.
Which cruise line?
Nearly every major line sails the Caribbean, so the choice comes down to style. Royal Caribbean and Carnival offer large ships with lots of activities and a casual feel. Disney Cruise Line is built around families. Celebrity Cruises leans toward modern design and dining. Norwegian and MSC are known for flexible dining and many short sailings, while Virgin Voyages is adults-only. Smaller premium and luxury lines reach islands the big ships cannot.
Packing and travel documents
- Pack light layers, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, water shoes and a light rain jacket.
- Bring dressier outfits if your ship has formal or dress-up nights.
- US citizens on closed-loop cruises that start and end at the same US port may be allowed other proof of citizenship, but a valid passport is strongly recommended. It makes flying home much easier if you miss the ship or need to leave early. See our US passport page.
- Check current entry requirements for each island with the destination country and our advisors before you sail.
- Consider travel insurance, especially for sailings during hurricane season.
If you are flying in, plan to arrive the day before. Flight delays are common in winter, and the ship will not wait for late passengers.
