No-Fly Cruises from the San Francisco Bay Area

Where you can cruise from San Francisco without flying: Alaska, Mexico, Hawaii and the Pacific Coast, when to go, and how SF compares with Seattle and Vancouver.

By The Cruise Company Team · Updated October 2026

If you live in the Bay Area, some of the best cruises start right at home. Drive, ride BART or take a short rideshare to Pier 27, and a few hours later you are sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge. No flights, no airport security and no worrying about a delayed connection on embarkation day. Here is where you can go from San Francisco, when to go, and how a cruise from home compares with flying to another port.

1. Why sail from San Francisco

2. Where you can go from San Francisco

ItineraryTypical lengthUsual seasonWhat to expect
Alaska10 to 14 nightsSpring to early fallPorts such as Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway, plus scenic cruising past glaciers, with sea days up and down the coast.
Mexican Riviera & BajaAbout 5 to 11 nightsMostly fall to springSunny ports such as Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta, or shorter trips along Baja California.
HawaiiAbout 14 to 16 nights round tripMostly fall to springSeveral days at sea each way, then a series of island ports. Ideal if you love time on the ship.
Pacific CoastAbout 3 to 7 nightsMostly spring and fallShorter sailings along the California coast and to the Pacific Northwest, often when ships move between seasons. A good first cruise.
Longer voyagesTwo weeks or moreOccasionalSome sailings head across the Pacific or to the South Pacific when ships change regions.

Schedules change every year. Our Cruises from San Francisco page shows the sailings currently available in our booking engine, updated several times a day.

3. Which cruise lines sail from San Francisco

Princess Cruises has the most sailings from San Francisco, with Alaska, Mexico, Hawaii and Pacific Coast voyages across the year. Other lines, including Carnival and some premium and luxury lines, sail from the city in certain seasons, and many West Coast itineraries call at San Francisco along the way. Which lines are in port changes from year to year, so ask us what is sailing on your dates.

4. Alaska from San Francisco, Seattle or Vancouver?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from Bay Area travelers. All three are great choices. The difference is time and travel.

Starting fromGetting thereTypical cruiseBest for
San FranciscoNo flight10 to 14 nights round trip, with more sea daysTravelers who want to skip flying and enjoy a longer, relaxed voyage
SeattleShort flightUsually 7 nights round trip, often stopping in Victoria, B.C.Travelers with a week off who want more time in Alaska ports
VancouverShort flight7 nights round trip, or one way to or from AlaskaPairing a cruise with a land tour, such as Denali

5. Easy short-flight ports

If the right ship or dates are not sailing from San Francisco, these ports are a short flight away and offer many more departures, especially to Mexico:

6. Planning tips for Bay Area cruisers

Advisor tip: on a long round trip from San Francisco, a balcony is worth considering. With several sea days, you will spend more time in your cabin, and Alaska’s scenery is best enjoyed from your own veranda.
