U.S. Citizens Travel Guidelines
For most voyages, U.S. citizens are highly recommended to carry a valid U.S. Passport Book. While alternative documents are technically accepted for specific regional itineraries, a passport ensures safe travel and prevents reentry issues in case of unexpected emergency air evacuations.
- U.S. Passport Book (Highly Recommended, valid for at least 6 months post-cruise)
- U.S. Passport Card (Valid for land and sea border crossings only)
- State-Issued Birth Certificate with matching government-issued photo ID
Important: Passport Cards cannot be used for international flights. If you must fly home unexpectedly due to a medical or travel emergency, you will face major travel delays without a valid Passport Book.

International Guest Requirements
All guests who are not citizens of the United States or Canada must present a valid passport for travel. Depending on your nationality and the specific ports of call on your cruise itinerary, transit or entry visas may be strictly required to board the vessel.
- Valid International Passport with a minimum of 6 months remaining from cruise end
- Multiple-Entry Visa (B-1/B-2, ESTA, or equivalent visa waiver for U.S. transits)
- Port-Specific Visas (consult individual consulates of countries visited)
Please note: Guests without proper visa documentation will be denied boarding at port check-in without refund. Visas must be secured independently prior to the travel date.

Closed-Loop Sailings Exceptions
Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), U.S. citizens can cruise on ‘closed-loop’ voyages (itineraries starting and ending in the same U.S. port) with alternative proof of citizenship. This special exemption applies to regions like the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Bermuda.
- Original Government-issued Birth Certificate (hospital certs are not accepted)
- Valid State-issued Photo ID (e.g. driver's license with matching name)
- Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) fulfills both proof of identity and citizenship
Emergency Warning: If the cruise ship must bypass a port due to weather or itinerary changes, or if you must fly back to the United States mid-voyage due to an emergency, you will be unable to board an international flight without a valid U.S. Passport Book.
WHTI Guidelines
Even though closed-loop rules exist, the Cruise Line Industry Association (CLIA) and foreign customs departments strongly advocate traveling with a valid Passport Book on all cruises to prevent unexpected emergency stranding.
Minors & Family Travel Policies
To prevent international child abduction, cruise lines and border agencies enforce strict authorization requirements for minors (under age 18) traveling without both parents or with legal guardians.
- Notarized Parental Consent Letter (signed by the non-traveling parent/guardian)
- Legal proof of sole custody or guardianship if only one parent exists
- Original government Birth Certificates for infants under 18 years
The notarized consent letter must clearly state the minor’s name, traveling guardian’s name, permitted travel dates, cruise vessel name, and explicitly authorize temporary custody and medical decisions.
Solo Parents Notice
Single parents with sole custody, or parents with different last names from the minor, should carry certified proof of custody or name change documents to prevent delays at U.S. and foreign customs.
